Bodypack Transmitter and Receiver Proximity: November 2016 Question of the Month

Shure Notes® email newsletter subscribers submit their burning audio questions every month, and we pick one to publish in the email and here. This month, we focus on wireless mic transmitter and IEM bodypack receiver proximity.

Tarmo in Estonia asked:

Why is there no artist bodypack 2-in-1, with an instrument transmitter and IEM receiver in one small box? Shure makes both products, but separately. And always I see artists wearing two (or more) boxes.

Shure product support answered:

There are no bodypacks with both a receiver and transmitter in one housing. The reason is physics: you cannot have a transmitter that close to a receiver. Instead, we recommend using two bodypacks positioned on either side of your body.

What about mobile phones?

Tarmo wrote back, curious about mobile phones, which have a transmitter and receiver in one housing. Our support team explained that it’s difficult to get a high-quality transmitter and receiver right next to each other. The audio quality and performance requirements of a phone and live sound gear are different. Plus, our customers prefer to choose their wireless microphone system and in-ear monitor system separately.
