Usually before a new album is released, artists and their record labels release what they call the album’s single. Singles are typically the album’s best song or songs, which are chosen to be released prior to the album’s official release for promotional purposes.
In this week’s Juno Award Highlight, I am happy to feature the nominees for Single of the Year, and as you can imagine, this one is really hard to pick. Every one of these songs is sooo good!!! Take a listen below and hear for yourself. At the end of this post I’ll share with you who I think will win. This week I also included my favorite lyrics from each song. And the nominees are…
“Reflektor” by Arcade Fire
Favorite Lyrics: “Entre la nuit, la nuit et l’aurore, Entre le royaume, des vivants et des morts, If this is heaven, I don’t know what it’s for, If I can’t find you there, I don’t care”
“Inner Ninja” by Classified feat, David Myles
Favorite Lyrics: “Nobody’s gonna see me comin’, Nobody’s gonna hear a sound, No matter how hard they tryin’, No stoppin’ me since I’ve found, My inner ninja…”
“It’s a Beautiful Day” by Michael Bublé
Favorite Lyrics: “It’s a beautiful day, the sun is up, the music’s playing, And even if it started rainin’, You won’t hear this boy complaining…”
“What I Wouldn’t Do” by Serena Ryder
Favorite Lyrics: “Your love is like an ocean, That always takes me home, Whispering wind is blowing, Telling me I’m not alone, Your love is like a river, That I am floating down, I’ve never been a swimmer, But I know that I’ll never drown, I know that I’ll never drown”
“Closer” by Tegan and Sara
Favorite Lyrics: “All I want to get is, A little bit closer, All I want to know is, Can you come a little closer?”
Told you it was hard… These are all fantastic songs! Especially a fan of “Inner Ninja” and “Closer” but I think it will come down to “Reflektor” vs “What I Wouldn’t Do.” I’m a huge Arcade Fire fan, and I love “Reflecktor,” and I think it’s going to win but, between me and you, I wouldn’t be disappointed if Serena Ryder’s “What I Wouldn’t Do” sneaks in, entre la nuit, la nuit et l’aurore, and takes home the award. It’s just such big song…
Man, this was a hard one, but so much fun. Next week, we will take a look at the nominees for Album of the Year.
