Bring On The Cover Songs…

Covers songs can be the worst thing to ever happen or one of the most surprising things that makes you see a song in an entirely new way. I have a love-hate relationship with cover songs, which I think is how most people feel. I’ve been on a kick lately though and thought I’d share some of my favorite covers. First, Grant Lee Phillips cover of “Boys Don’t Cry” by The Cure. This slowed down version of the classic hit, provides a more intimate listen into the lyrics of the song. I love the acoustic take, it seems gentler, softer, and Grant Lee Phillips voice sounds as if it’s aching. You can empathize with the pain and regret that’s hiding behind his masculine front.

Next, one of many covers featured on the popular teen drama The O.C. (which happens to be one of my favorite shows ever. Judge me.) is Nada Surf’s cover of OMD’s “If You Leave.” Like the Grant Lee Phillips cover mentioned above, this song just pulls at your heart a little more than the original. You feel more of the heartbreak in the lyrics. This smoother version really makes you connect with the thought of having to say goodbye to someone you care about. Plus if you also grew up with or watched The O.C. you can just imagine the poor face to the left every time you hear it or you can just watch the entire goodbye scene here.

The more I write this, I’m starting to wonder if I’m just a sucker for stripped down versions of songs that highlight the emotions of the song.  The next cover is certainly a prime example of that. I’ve always been a fan of Justin Vernon, even back to the days when I had no idea how to pronounce Bon Iver. He’s the got an angelic voice that can’t be compared to many. This version of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” is pure and honest, exposing the heartache of unrequited love.

Then there’s these surprisingly good covers by former Disney Channel stars…
