You’re either a fan of remixes or you’re not. I get it, I’ve heard pretty bad ones myself. But as a former DJ, I do love a good remix when properly executed. Especially when it’s already a great song people love but it’s presented to you in a different way.
Some remixes can barely be called remixes, but then there are others that change the song enough to complement the original perfectly. Those are my favorites. That is why I am a big fan of Portland-based artist RAC and his 2012 album Chapter One which was made up of remixes of many popular songs by Foster The People, Phoenix, The Shins, Tegan and Sara among many others. So I was very happy when I found out we were contacted about working with him regarding an endorsement.
This past Monday, RAC played a live sold-out show at Lincoln Hall. “Live” you ask? Yes live, minus the vocals for most of the set. I’m very used to the difference between catching a live concert and catching a DJ, so I was curious how he was going to pull it off. As soon as I walked in, I ran into my friend Paul who is head of production at Lincoln Hall and I asked him if this was a DJ set or if there would be a live band. I was very happy to hear it was going to be live. The only thing that was missing was the great singers that he’s remixed and that have participated in his newest album Strangers released April 1st, but he will be playing at Lolla and some of those artist will be there. Fingers crossed that those who are there come up on stage with him to accompany him. How cool would that be?!?
As the show started, RAC took the stage and played guitar on all songs. He was accompanied by a very tight band which included a bass player, keyboard player and a drummer. They played songs from his previous album as well as the current album all live, again minus the live vocals. Working for a microphone company, I thought it was a little strange at first to not see a vocalist on stage but I quickly got over it as I really enjoyed being able to focus on the musicians on stage who were all mic’d up using Shure. They also used PSM® 900 for their monitor mix.
It turned out to be quite the dance party as everyone in the room was dancing. It is exactly why I love his music/remixes. It gets you to dance and sometimes that is exactly what we need on a random Monday night…
Strangers features original tracks from RAC with many guest artists. It’s a great listen. Check it via Spotify below and get ready to dance.
