Ah, summer internships. Filing, coffee runs, answering phones…oh wait, those were MY summer internships back in the late nineties. Summer internships at Shure are real jobs, and our recruiters travel far and wide to find the best college talent to fill them.

Interns at Shure can expect to be an important part of their team, be it in engineering, IT, marketing, or wherever in the company they work. There’s orientation, and then *BAM*, they jump into projects right away. In their free time, they hit the beaches, take in a Cubs game, rock out at Lollapalooza, and explore the city, morphing into real Chicagoans no matter where they’re from. At the end of the summer, they each present a recap of the work they’ve done at Shure. By then, they’re confident that they can contribute to an organization in a meaningful way. I admit, I get a little emotional watching them take flight.

Here’s what some of our Summer 2012 crew had to say about their experiences:

“My experience at Shure this summer has fully exceeded my expectations. It may be hard to believe, but each day I woke up excited to go to work. Every morning on my drive to Niles, I knew that the day would present a new learning experience because there is not one day in Artist Relations that repeats itself. I have gained more knowledge about the different aspects of this business than I ever thought I would just within a matter of three months.” – Alexandria Monterrubio, Artist Relations Intern & Winner of Get the Gig Competition

“The most rewarding experience this summer at Shure was knowing that I was working on a project that is going to help the company in the near future. This was my first internship, and I had no idea what to expect. I immediately felt as if I was contributing, and it felt very rewarding knowing that my project was helping Shure.” – Raul Hudema, Global Logistics Intern

“My most rewarding experience at Shure this summer was designing for a platform that was new to both me, and Shure.” – Ben Olger, User Experience Intern

“My most rewarding experience at Shure was by far meeting the many friendly, like-minded and driven people who make up the heart of this company. The shared love of what we are doing is really refreshing to see.” – Saul Lipton, RF Intern

“My most rewarding experience at Shure has been stepping outside my comfort zone and learning new skills. I came into the summer knowing very little about products like Microsoft SharePoint, Visio, and Visual Studio. However, I will be leaving with the ability to not only use these products, but to understand them in a very technical way.” – Kevin Newhouse, Technical Services Intern

“Most rewarding Shure experience: I really enjoyed being able to be a part of a new product prototype build this summer. I learned how all different aspects of the launch team contributed to the product, and it was rewarding to produce the final physical product in the end.” – Sarah Bach, Manufacturing Intern

“The most rewarding part about working at Shure is getting to know all my fellow associates and strengthening my knowledge of internal audit.” – John Lloyd, Internal Audit Intern

“This was my first work experience in the U.S. I was lucky to get involved in project meetings and was surprised to see open and active communication that is different from my culture. No matter how long the associates have been working in Shure or how experienced or skilled they are, people can challenge them and express their own ideas face to face. This open communication will not only benefit the projects, but the whole company.” – Jian Qi, Project Management Intern

“It was extremely rewarding to finally start my internship and find out the Shure is as awesome and interesting as I imagined. For example, I didn’t know if in a corporate environment, employees’ love for music and interest in the technology behind music would shine. It’s easy for something you love to become a little less awesome, and sometimes even something you hate, when it’s your 9-to-5 job. It doesn’t seem like that’s an issue here at Shure. People are still enthusiastic and excited by Shure products and music in general.” – Rohan Sahai, Product Management Intern

Around October or November, we start recruiting for the next crop of summer interns, so if you’re interested, keep an eye on our Careers page.

Here’s a shot of the Summer 2012 crew on the lawn outside Shure HQ. And to all of our summer interns, thanks for your great work. We miss you already.

Anytime someone asks what a typical day is like for us in Artist Relations here at Shure, I can’t help but laugh a little at the word “typical.” Try as we might to carefully plan and stick to our agendas for the day, something random comes our way and the focus quickly shifts. Entire weeks have gotten off track, but rock n’ roll does not have a schedule and we are always at the ready when the call comes… and we never have a case of the “Mondays” here either.

Just last week, I sat down in front of my laptop on a quiet Monday morning, intent on getting through some of the things that have lingered on my “to do” list, when I heard from Brian French, Smokey Robinson’s production manager. Brian sent an email to let me know that Smokey was in town to perform with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall that evening. He invited us to come down for rehearsal and to stay for the show later as well.

Hmmm… plow through some emails in my stuffy office or go hang with a Motown legend? Guess which one we picked? Actually, read all about it in our Summer Intern’s recent blog post here: http://blog.shure.com/mic-check/smokey-robinson-at-symphony-center/

So, this week’s random-ness brought us to a really cool rehearsal facility in the Fulton Market area of Chicago called the Music Garage. The place is owned and operated by a guy named Scott Spector, and it is state-of-the-art when in comes to a practice space or small studio. Oh, and there’s this AMAZING drum shop called Vic’s that lives in the same building… it’s your heaven if you’re a drummer, trust me. Check it out here: www.musicgarage.com

No, we were not looking for a place to rehearse with our artist relations band… we do have cool names if we ever do go down that questionable path. We were actually there to drop off some mics and listen to a little of the the Chris Robinson Brotherhood band while they prepped for their tour. Chris (yes, that guy from The Black Crowes) and his band just released an album entitled Big Moon Ritual, very cool stuff and different from the Crowes. The band is comprised of all of the same members that appear on the album, so these guys know each other and the material very well.

During our visit, they were actually working on a new song Chris wrote, trying to put everything in its right place. It’s always cool to see a band working on a new idea that evolves into a song… and sometimes it happens pretty quickly when the musicians know each other and their instruments that well. Aside from the musical aspect of our visit, the witty banter in between was just as enjoyable.

Be sure to check out the new album and catch the guys on tour! They’re playing this weekend in Chicago if you’re around. I’ll be sure to write you next week about something random in my week. Although next week is gonna be completely bananas… I already know it.

-Cory
