Shure Whiteboard – Two Common Causes of RF Interference

When it comes to RF interference, there are two elements (or items if you like) that come up frequently as common culprits – metal and salt water. We’ve written plenty of detail about these major RF enemies before, and the following video should help to add context.

Water droplets, which can harm wireless

In essence, large metal structures (fences, stage rigs, etc) and salt water (predominately in people) attenuate RF signals significantly. There ability to disrupt an otherwise healthy signal is often overlooked as we’re used to RF travelling through other large structures and walls with relative ease. Fortunately, with a little diligence and common best practice, interference from both of these impervious sources can be easily avoided.

    500MHz is a long way off 2 metre wavelength. More like 60cm.
    Also in the second scenario, I think you mean the receiver is at Front of House, not Back of Stage (known as Upstage in theatre terms.. )

      Yes, we’re aware the measurement is not accurate (demonstration purposes only). Either way, a metal fence or similar would certainly cause issues. Terminology wise, yep you’re quite right – front-of-house is what we mean. Thanks.
